Pertinent Culinary School Information


Culinary school information is bountiful if you do a search online. Most schools offer a website full of information for you to look at. Choosing which school however may not seem quite as easy though. When evaluating culinary school information; there are some very important considerations to weigh so that you enroll in a school that will ensure your chef career gets off to a good start.

Keep these things in mind when doing your evaluation:

1. Does the school offer the cooking courses of study you are considering?

There are several different chef career paths you can follow. They include (but are not limited to):

• Vegetarian

You will learn to prepare cuisine that does not have meat, fish or poultry in it.

• Vegan

In addition to cuisine that does not have meat fish or poultry; the cuisine you will learn to prepare also does not include and animal products or by-products. Ingredients such as honey, eggs, milk or gelatin are excluded from the recipes prepared.

• Pastry

This includes desserts and other pastry recipes.

• General

The course work gives an overall knowledge of a variety of cuisine. Fundamental skills needed to perform a variety of chef functions are covered.

• Sushi

You will learn the art of sushi preparation utilizing different types of raw fish and sea food.

• Specialty

Specialty schools cover specific types of cuisine such as Italian, Mexican, and American to name a few.

2. Does the school have federal and state financial aid?

Some schools are great to further your culinary education; but these private institutions may not accept financial aid. Unless you are paying in cash, it is best to make sure the school you choose takes financial aid.

3. Do you want to attend a physical institution or would an online course of study work for you?

Be honest with yourself here. Sitting at home and going to school sounds inviting, but what if you are in the middle of a chocolate mousse in your kitchen and need an instructor’s assistance? If you are a person that learns better with hands on instruction, online culinary schools may not be appropriate for you.

4. What are the credentials of the school you are considering?

What about the culinary schools certification? If you want to be a certified chef, the school you attend must be certified. You may take classes and gain the skills necessary to be a chef, but certification for employment purposes require an accredited school.

5. Be wary of schools that sound too good to be true.

Check the reputation of the school you are considering. Talk to previous students who have graduated in the past. Are they employed now? Did they have any problems with the school? Don’t overlook a previous student as a source of culinary school information. A good question to ask is “How much money does a chef make annually that has graduated from the school you are considering?” Some schools have such a highly regarded reputation; their graduates demand a larger salary.

It is a good idea to start a file of culinary school information you gather, and then at a later time you can refer to it when making any final decisions.
